Coming Together with ABA to Support Learners with ASD and CCN

Date/Location:

June 16, 2021

Description:

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) will be defined and explained in the context of treatment of learners with ASD and Complex Communication Needs. The requirement for collaboration will be discussed by the governing boards for both Board-Certified Behavioral Analysts (BCBAs) and speech-language pathologists (SLPs).  The strengths of each discipline will be compared along with difficulties faced when professionals “don’t get along.”  The unique benefits of Minspeak® for this population will be outlined along with challenges in teaching learners with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).  Successful case studies will be shared in which BCBAs and SLPs collaborated to teach learners Minspeak® including a preschool-aged, school-aged, and young adult learner.  Finally, ideas will be shared to promote collaboration including establishing a shared framework, learning each field’s professional jargon and moving towards common terminology, and focusing on the data to ensure efficacy of treatment.

Speakers:

Kimberly Ho, PhD, CCC-SLP

Learning Outcomes:

Analyze the differences between the strengths of BCBAs and SLPs.

Discuss how Minspeak® as a language representation method is uniquely suited to learners with ASD.

Apply ABA principles in planning for language instruction of Minspeak® for a learner with ASD and CCN.
