Switching to Self-Regulation: Using Assistive Technology to Create a Sensory-Based Calming Space for Students with Complex Communication & Access Needs

Date/Location:

April 11, 2024

Description:

Social emotional learning (SEL) and self-regulation skill development are essential elements of classroom instruction, especially for children with complex communication and access needs. These students may have difficulty interpreting and communicating their needs to others, which often results in frustration, emotional outbursts, and isolation from others. Therefore, it is crucial that educators and related service professionals understand how children with complex needs communicate about their emotions to support their overall well-being and academic success.

Speakers:

Kelly Clark, M.S., Occupational Therapist, ATP

Learning Outcomes:

Define emotional regulation and recognize its importance for their students.

Identify three ways to use assistive technology and AAC to support emotion identification with their students.

Demonstrate how to use assistive technology to create a calming environment for their students to practice self-regulation skills.
