Supporting Student Access: Mobility, Technology, and Play
Date/Location:
March 16, 2026: Winterville, GA
Description:
This continuing education course is designed for occupational and physical therapists working in the school setting and focuses on enhancing student access, participation, and functional success through adaptive equipment, play-based supports, and practical intervention tools. Participants will engage in three interactive sessions:
1. Adaptive Equipment for Positioning and Mobility in School-Based Practice: Rifton representatives will provide hands-on training with adaptive equipment including standers, gait trainers, seating systems, and classroom supports. Participants will explore clinical decision-making related to positioning, mobility, and postural alignment to improve functional participation within the school environment.
2. The Power of Play: Community Resources and Assistive Technology Through Lekotek: Lekotek leaders will introduce their play-based services and assistive technology resources available to children and families. This session will highlight how adapted toys, technology tools, and community programming support developmental skills, social engagement, and inclusive participation. Therapists will learn how to collaborate with community partners to extend support beyond the school setting.
3. Make and Take: In this hands-on session, participants will create simple, functional intervention tools that can be immediately implemented in therapy and classroom settings. Emphasis will be placed on low-cost, adaptable strategies that support fine motor, positioning, and access needs while promoting student independence.
