Supporting children and youth in families with ALS: Guide to Healthcare Professionals

Date/Location:

January 4 – February 15, 2021

Description:

Living in a family with ALS/MND can be complex, confusing, and isolating. Therefore, many families look to health and social care professionals for care, support and targeted services to improve quality of life for all. Numerous programs exist for adults and persons living with ALS, providing these professionals with options for the adults in the family. Yet, almost 1/3 of families living with ALS include children and youth under the age of 18, an isolated group with few targeted services. The lack of services may be due to professionals who have limited knowledge about the experiences of children in the family, their needs, or how best to support these children and youth. While professionals across setting may encounter children and youth in families with ALS, these issues are often most acutely felt in schools, with many school staff unsure of the disease, and how best to support the student.

This session is geared specifically for all professionals, across health and school settings. Based on clinical practice and research on families with ALS, participants will develop a deeper understanding of the experiences of children and youth in families with ALS, including the role they play as caregivers. Participants will be presented with numerous real- life case scenarios, identifying gaps in services for youth in schools and health settings, guiding the application of skills and serves for children and youth in families with ALS.
