Shared Reading and AAC: Supporting Language and Literacy for Emergent Learners

Description:

Shared reading is one component of comprehensive emergent literacy instruction. The focus is on reading with learners, not to them. This workshop will suggest ways to fully include students with physical impairments and students who use AAC. The session will cover both classroom, small group, and 1:1 instruction. Targets include interactive, engaging supports for goals such as vocabulary growth, text-to-self connections, and attending to print.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will identify three (3) criteria for selecting texts that are ideal for shared reading.

Participants will describe three (3) strategies for implementing shared reading sessions.

Participants will summarize three (3) strategies for supporting students who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
