More than a Box that Talks – Why Device Selection Matters

Date/Location:

April 28, 2021

Description:

Improvements in technology and forms of access by themselves do not improve language outcomes when that language is through AAC. This presentation will discuss the necessary components to be included within an AAC system to allow for language development, describe the language representation methods available in current AAC technologies and provide participants with critical questions to ask during the device selection process to identify the most appropriate speech generating device to support language and communication growth from a developmental perspective.  Additionally, there are essential components beyond the selection of a device that impact the language outcomes of individuals who use AAC including generating appropriate goals to target language growth and training stakeholders in the individual’s life to promote and support language development.

Speakers:

Deann O’Lenick, PhD, CCC-SLP, MBA

Deborah Laurent Witkowski, MA, CCC-SLP
