Language Development Through AAC: Dual-Symbol Immersion (Course One-Emergent Communication)

Description:

The course will include interactive lecture to present theories and research that are the foundation of Dual Symbol Immersion. Additionally, interactive activities and experiments will take place to further understanding, allow for experiential learning, and encourage participation. Demonstration of implementation of theories will take place, and attendees will practice implementation in various scenarios with various individuals. Brainstorming of solutions for various roadblocks will take place in groups and as a whole.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will demonstrate understanding of language development and apply it to language through AAC.
a. Participants will name four elements of language development and apply them to language through AAC. (language exposure before expression, babbling, meaning making, first words, two-word combinations)

Participants will demonstrate understanding of the impact of vocabulary selection on language development
a. Participants will describe the impact of vocabulary selection on language development by naming four communicative functions/pragmatic functions (answer, greet, question, request objects, request actions, comment on objects, comment on actions, reject, terminate)

Participants will differentiate and distinguish core vocabulary and fringe vocabulary
a. Participants will define core vocabulary and fringe vocabulary (frequency of use, consistency across environments, consistency across topics, consistency over time).

Participants will distinguish types of symbols and rationale for symbol organization
a. Participants will describe characteristics symbols and rationale for symbol organization (single-meaning, semantic compaction, color, b/w, categories, meaning).


Participants will relate principles of second language learning theory to the development of language through AAC
a. Participants will state three principles of second language learning theory related to the development of language through AAC (immersion, quiet/silent period, cognition)

Participants will apply Dual-Symbol Immersion during information exchanges with other participants
a. Participants will demonstrate Dual-Symbol Immersion during information exchanges with other participants (use symbols in addition to verbal language during typical interactions with others, using at least one symbol per spoken sentence).

Participants will develop language goals, applying developmental principles and sequences
a. Participants will write two expressive language goals, applying developmental principles and sequences, for an emergent communicator using AAC (goals will reflect language development, language acquisition, and language sequence).
