Language Development Through AAC: Dual-Symbol Immersion (Course One-Emergent Communication)

Description:

The course will include interactive lecture to present theories and research that are the foundation of Dual Symbol Immersion. Additionally, interactive activities and experiments will take place to further understanding, allow for experiential learning, and encourage participation. Demonstration of implementation of theories will take place, and attendees will practice implementation in various scenarios with various individuals. Brainstorming of solutions for various roadblocks will take place in groups and as a whole.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will demonstrate understanding of language development and apply it to language through AAC.

Participants will demonstrate understanding of the impact of vocabulary selection on language development.

Participants will differentiate and distinguish core vocabulary and fringe vocabulary.

Participants will distinguish types of symbols and rationale for symbol organization.

Participants will relate principles of second language learning theory to the development of language through AAC.

Participants will apply Dual-Symbol Immersion during information exchanges with other participants.

Participants will develop language goals, applying developmental principles and sequences.
