Inclusive Innovation: Designing and Documenting Assistive Technology Plan for Student Success

On Demand

Description:

In the public education system, classrooms lack the appropriate number of paraprofessionals, there is a shortage of special education teachers and there is not enough time in the day to sufficiently train staff to support our students that utilize assistive technology. How do we ensure that the staff working with our students are providing them the support they need, but not over-prompting them? How do we support our rotating substitute teachers or substitute paraprofessionals who have never worked with students who utilize assistive technology? Dr. Karen Erickson and Dr. David Koppenhaver created the “Red Yellow Green” implementation plan for assistive technology. Green represents a low demand or a task demand that a student can complete independently or with little support. Yellow represents a moderate task demand or a student requires a moderate amount of support to complete using their assistive technology. Red represents highly demanding tasks or a student who requires a lot of adult support to use their assistive technology. This session will demonstrate how to apply the “Red Yellow Green” implementation plan for students who utilize multiple assistive technologies in addition to students who may be using one assistive technology, but their proficiency of use may vary by task demand. Attendees will be encouraged to have one student in mind and will create a “Red Yellow Green” implementation plan. Attendees will walk away with a completed assistive technology implementation plan that can be easily followed and interpreted by the ever-changing educators, and substitute teachers that work with our students. Furthermore, this living document can be updated year-to-year and even support students transitioning between grade levels.
