Educate and Empower: The SLPs guide to managing the communication needs of individuals with ALS

Description:

Individuals with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) have complex communication needs involving use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology (AT) throughout the progression of the disease. Decisions regarding AAC and AT options are driven by the speech and motor stages of progression. This presentation will describe an evidence-based framework for decision making regarding specialized AAC and AT interventions with the ALS population for functional application into daily clinical practice.

Describe Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Assistive Technology (AT) intervention in the ALS population

Differentiate specific clinical management techniques AAC and AT for the ALS population based on speech and motor stage progression

Prioritize specific low tech and high tech AAC and alternative access intervention techniques based on ALS motor and speech severity levels
