CDC Accessible Materials Project Training – Communicating with People with Extreme Low Literacy Including People with Cognitive or Intellectual Disabilities

Description:

This session will be designed to increase awareness about people who read or listen with understanding below a third-grade level, including people who have cognitive or intellectual disabilities, and their communication needs. Presenters will share solutions for public health professions to create inclusive communication resources and programs for these audiences. In order to achieve health equity, it is necessary to increase accessibility of health communications materials for people with disabilities.

Learning Outcomes:

List four (4) specific ways to increase access to various modes of communication for people who have extremely low literacy including people with cognitive or intellectual disabilities based on principles of universal design for learning, Section 508, WCAG 2.0/2.1, and assistive technology.

Identify two (2) literacy considerations for people who have extremely low literacy, including people who have cognitive or intellectual disabilities.

Identify four (4) key principles for producing simplified text materials using the Guidelines for Minimizing the Complexity of Text.
