Bridging the Gap Before the SGD Arrives

Description:

Parents and other community members involved with children with complex communication needs play a critical role in their children’s learning of communication, language, and AAC. Family support and training is crucial for successful implementation of a device, and conversely, failing to prioritize issues important to families can lead to device abandonment and overall dissatisfaction with the system. The following strategies have been proven to facilitate successful AAC implementation: use of aided language input, focusing on core words in inspiring contexts, providing contingent responses, expanding communication, and using expectant wait time. The more complicated puzzle tends to be supporting other members of the team to understand and use these strategies in meaningful and motivating contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

Participants will be able to describe two benefits of having an alternative system (i.e., Chat Editor, PASS software, or low tech supports) prior to receiving a device.

Participants will be able to describe two benefits of having an alternative system (i.e., Chat Editor, PASS software, or low tech supports) after receiving a device.

Participants will be able to describe two sample activities in which they could use emulation software to facilitate AAC use in an everyday context at home, school, or within the community.
