Bridging Gaps: Mobility, Communication, and Transition in School-Based Therapy

This continuing education course is designed for occupational and physical therapists working in the school setting, providing essential skills to support student success. Participants will engage in three interactive sessions:

Wheelchair Measurement and Fitting for Students – Learn best practices for assessing and measuring students for appropriate wheelchair seating and mobility solutions. This session will cover the fundamentals of posture, pressure management, and equipment selection to enhance student
participation and comfort.

American Sign Language (ASL) for School-Based Therapists – Gain foundational ASL skills tailored to therapists working with students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have communication challenges.
This session will focus on key signs, functional vocabulary, and strategies to improve accessibility and engagement in therapy sessions.

Student Transition Planning: Preparing for Life Beyond School – Explore the therapist’s role in helping students transition from school-based services to post-secondary education, employment, and independent living. This session will cover assessment tools, goal-setting strategies, and collaborative
approaches to ensure a smooth and meaningful transition. By the end of this course, participants will leave with practical tools and knowledge to enhance student mobility, communication, and long-term success.

Learning Outcomes:

Assess and measure students for appropriate wheelchair seating and mobility solutions, considering posture, pressure management, and functional needs.

Demonstrate foundational ASL skills to facilitate effective communication with students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have communication challenges.

Identify key components of student transition planning, including assessment tools, goal-setting strategies, and collaboration with families and educators.

Apply practical strategies to support student independence, participation, and accessibility in the school environment.

Enhance interdisciplinary collaboration by integrating mobility, communication, and transition planning into school-based therapy practices.
