Utilizing Telework as a Workplace Accommodation for Individuals with Physical Disabilities Who Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication
Date/Location:
November 13, 2024
Description:
Telework, defined as working from a location outside a traditional office setting using telecommunications technology, has emerged as a crucial model for workplace flexibility, especially for people with physical disabilities who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Several models of teleworking, including fully remote and hybrid arrangements, offer individuals the flexibility to work in environments best suited to their needs. For AAC users with physical disabilities, telework provides numerous advantages, such as eliminating transportation barriers, allowing for customized workspaces, and supporting asynchronous communication. Telework can also serve as a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), offering people with disabilities greater access to employment opportunities by reducing workplace barriers. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of teleworking, and its benefits for accessibility are likely to endure, creating future opportunities for a more inclusive workforce. We will talk about these topics in our webinar as we explore how telework can benefit people with disabilities using AAC and its future potential.
