Building Blocks to Autonomous Communication: Outcomes of a Systematic Approach to Supporting AAC Users

Date/Location:

October 2, 2024

Description:

As AAC specialists at the state level, we have had the opportunity to partner with educators throughout Michigan. Through this work, we found that many educators have splinter skills in regards to their understanding and support of students with complex communication needs. Many professionals engage in learning opportunities related to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC); however, these trainings can often be disjointed or disconnected. It is one thing to know the information, while it is quite another to apply the information, especially at a systems level. This model pulls it all together.
Building Blocks to Autonomous Communication represents a continuum of best practices of AAC. This 7-block model includes information on AAC fundamentals, AT consideration, building communication partner skills, exploring a variety of AAC tools, supporting AAC users who require alternative access, developing literacy skills, and creating inclusive environments beyond the brick and mortar school buildings.

Speakers:

Carolyn O’Hearn, M.A. CCC-SLP

Learning Outcomes:

Examine their current approach to system-wide implementation of AAC best practices.

Describe components of a seven-block team-based approach to support AAC users.

Explain three benefits of providing implementation support as part of professional development
