Building background knowledge is an essential component to comprehensive literacy instruction, especially for our most complex learners. This literacy lab will give participants the what, why and how of building background knowledge, so that all students can learn to connect to a variety of rich, age-respectful literature.

Explain 2 or more reasons why background knowledge is essential when providing comprehensive literacy instruction to students with complex communication needs.
Describe 2-3 examples of how to provide background knowledge for students with physical disabilities and/or CVI.
Explain the what, why and how of building background knowledge.
