Predictable Chart Writing, Canva and More…SoR & CLfa & Agency

Date/Location:

February 23, 2023

Description:

Written expression is an essential component of communication for all students; however, for our non-speaking students and AAC users, it is critical. Vocabulary and background knowledge building (Schema) can significantly impact reading, writing, and communication with AAC users. You need access to words to understand words in order to use words in shared reading and writing experiences. Our non-speaking students of all ages often come to us as emergent communicators and as emergent writers. Emergent writing is defined as “Emergent writing can be thought of as the explorations, experiments, and inventions of learners who do not yet fully understand all of the conventions that make written communication possible because of their inexperience with print generally and writing tools specifically, as well as their individual differences.” Erickson & Koppenhaver, 2020, p.63.
