Not Just in the Classroom – Supporting Executive Functioning Skills During Transition
On Demand
Description:
From time management to attention and organization, executive functioning skills keep us moving forward to accomplish each of the things we want to do in a day. Schools and educators have been working to support students struggling in one or more areas of executive functioning. High and low-tech tools are embedded into the school environment, and teachers work to incorporate strategies to support students with attention, time management, organization, or memory. From bell schedules and seating charts, to adult support and peer prompting, schools provide an environment with many built-in structures that support executive functioning. Even without individualized additional executive functioning supports that are added for struggling students, the school day structure provides a scaffold for how the day will progress and what each student needs to do. But when students transition to post-secondary life, have we provided the support and strategies necessary to help them thrive when the built-in school strategies are not present? This session will focus on the transition from the school environment to post-secondary life. Participants will be introduced to a framework to evaluate executive functioning supports for their effectiveness in different environments and how to choose strategies and tools that will support students both in school and as they transition.

Cassie Frost
