Conquering the Core Classroom: Providing Classroom Staff Education and Support Remotely
Date/Location:
February 11, 2021
Description:
In our fast-paced world of technology and ever-changing demands, it is often difficult to support teachers, speech-language pathologists, and paraprofessionals on the journey to mastering teaching core language in the classroom. Time is not the only factor which impacts successful AAC implementation. Lack of knowledge of core language, AAC devices, and implementation techniques also play significant roles in the decreased use of AAC in the classroom. The traditional model for providing staff support to team members consists of face-to-face training and consultation. However, current schedules and staff demands limit the opportunities for this training. So, how do you teach all this to a teacher, new employee, or new graduate in a few hours? Current research indicates the need for on-going and organized support or training. This presentation will review a self-paced remote training model for teachers and SLPs to increase knowledge skills in core language implementation.
Speakers:
Cortney Maholtz, M.A., CCC-SLP, AT Consultant
Brandy Harris, M.S., Ed.S., CCC-SLP, AT Specialist
Learning Outcomes:
Identify at least 2 current barriers to successful implementation of core language in the classroom.
Identify at least 3 research-based skills for successful implementation of core language in the classroom.
Identify at least 3 potential components of a remote learning module for staff training.
