CDC Accessible Materials Project Training – Enhancing Awareness of Disability and Accessible Communication

Description:

In order to achieve equity in emergency response and public health efforts, it is necessary to increase accessibility of communications materials for people with disabilities. Increased accessibility for people with disabilities can benefit everyone. This session will provide an overview of strategies to include the whole community, including people with disabilities, and how to incorporate accessibility throughout all modes of communication planning, especially in emergency response.

Learning Outcomes:

List two (2) statistics related to the prevalence of disability in the community, as well as the difference between the medical and social models of disabilities.

List three (3) basic principles of universal design for learning, implementing Section 508, WCAG 2.0/2.1, and assistive technology into various communication modes and communication products.

Identify two (2) or more of each of the following: (a) barriers to inclusion, (b) ways to go beyond accessible communication requirements, and (c) existing resources to contact for support.
