Bringing Literacy to Life: Using AAC & Sensory Elements to Build Connections

Date/Location:

March 21, 2024

Description:

One of the hallmark features of a comprehensive literacy program is helping learners build connections to what they are reading. Building connections between our lives and what happens in the books we read aids our comprehension and increases our engagement while reading and/or being read to. Helping students with complex communication needs build these connections can prove to be a challenge, especially when tasked with integrating varying types of AAC and additional strategies for literacy instruction, while keeping in mind their individual sensory needs. Research shows that creating engaging, multisensory learning, and communication opportunities for learners increases their emergent literacy and communication skills, and leads to greater, overall student success. However, integrating these components into a lesson can quickly become overwhelming, for even the most seasoned teacher.

Speakers:

Megan Stewart, M.S. CCC-SLP

Learning Outcomes:

Describe three features within AAC, literacy, and sensory components that make them beneficial additions to lessons for students with complex communication needs.

Design at least one lesson highlighting and incorporating one or more elements from each component of AAC, literacy, and sensory.

Relate two to three reasons that AAC, literacy, and sensory components are important to include in lessons.
