Boldly Building Belonging

On Demand

Description:

Inclusive education is a catalyst for improving outcomes for all students. Membership and belonging, participation, and learning a Common Core-aligned curriculum are all components of providing an equitable educational experience. In an inclusive school, all adults are responsible for every child, including those with extensive learning, social-emotional, and communication support needs. Staff members engage in effective methods for collaborative planning, instruction, and assessment to provide access for all students. Staff members model their acceptance of all school community and classroom members through their values, beliefs, and behavior. How might staff members cultivate a culture of membership and a true sense of belonging for all learners? Where might they begin? Utilizing the Maryland Coalition of Inclusive Education’s Framework of Inclusion, Floyd Cobb & John Krownapple’s Belonging Through a Culture of Dignity, and Dr. Paula Kluth’s Joyful Learning, participants will explore the differences and similarities between being a member of a group and genuinely belonging within that group. Participants will increase their awareness of how these two areas impact all students’ academic and social-emotional growth.
