AT in Transition: Lived Experiences in Community, Work and Independent Living
Date/Location:
November 11, 2026
Description:
Transitions to community participation, employment, and independent living can create new opportunities as well as practical challenges for people with disabilities. This session uses the lived experiences of a young man navigating these transitions to examine how assistive technology (AT) can support greater independence, participation, and self-determination. Through a case-study approach, participants will explore challenges that arise in everyday activities, including managing money and purchases, organizing time, completing chores and responsibilities, making health and medical decisions, managing personal care, and participating in recreational and community activities.
The session will connect these real-life experiences with practical examples of AT tools and strategies that can help address barriers and support successful transitions. By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify at least three transition challenges, list at least three AT tools that can support community, workplace, or independent living transitions, and identify at least three resources for learning more about AT, AI, and transition.

Ben Satterfield, Ed.D.
