AT in Transition: Don’t Just Pack the AT: Planning for Successful Transitions

November 11, 2026

Description:

Transitions through educational environments can be challenging for any student.  Students who rely on Assistive Technology (AT) to access their education may have additional barriers that can elevate these challenges.  Whether a student is moving from elementary to middle school or middle to high school, a successful transition requires more than simply moving a student, their IEP, and their assistive technology from one setting to another. This session will connect real-life experiences through academic transitions using practical strategies for successful assistive technology implementation.  As the parent of a son with a high-incidence disability and a professional specializing in assistive technology, the presenter brings firsthand experience supporting AT implementation during educational transitions from both the parent and educator perspectives. Participants will learn how educators, Assistive Technology Specialists, students, and their families can work together to identify what needs to happen in order to support a successful transition of assistive technology into a new school environment.

Speakers:

Amy Scheifflee, M.Ed., CCC-SLP

Learning Outcomes:

Identify barriers to assistive technology use when transitioning to a new environment.

Identify multiple ways to help students build independent self-advocacy skills through coaching and collaboration.
