AAC Summer Camp Volunteer Information

AAC Summer Camp Volunteer Information

We currently have enough volunteers and are no longer accepting applications.

Thank you for your interest in being a volunteer counselor at the AAC Institute’s 2017 ICAN™ Talk AAC Summer Camp. As a non-profit organization, we depend on the assistance of volunteer speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and graduate students in communication disorders and rehabilitation sciences to host our campers. The camp will take place July 25-29, 2017 at the Crowne Plaza Pittsburgh South.

The camp is an excellent opportunity for you to obtain training and experience working directly with the pediatric populations that benefit from augmentative and alternative communication or AAC –  children with severe communication disorders associated with cerebral palsy, Rett syndrome, Down syndrome, autism, and others conditions that are not commonly seen in regular schools or other clinical settings.

Volunteers are required to attend a 1.5-day AAC training session (7/25-7/26) before camp starts that includes instruction from Dr. Katya Hill and our clinical staff on AAC intervention strategies and hands-on practice on a variety of high-tech AAC systems by representatives from AAC companies

Each volunteer counselor is assigned a camper to accompany and support throughout the camp program, which starts with a welcome reception at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, July 26th  to meet campers and families. The camp runs from 8:30 am-4:00 pm Thursday and Friday, July 27-28th, and from 8:30 am-12:30 pm on Saturday, July 29th.

A camp t-shirt, and program meals are provided. Volunteers are expected to cover their travel expenses to and from the camp location in suburban Pittsburgh and their lodging costs if they are coming from out-of-town. A limited number of rooms at our discounted group rate are available at the Crowne Plaza Pittsburgh South where we host the camp.

In exchange for your time and effort, the AAC Institute offers continuing education credits (CEUs) for certified SLPs for the training hours.

We welcome you to apply. Applications will be reviewed to make the best match with a camper.  Special consideration will be given to any volunteer who refers or accompanies a registered camper.
